NAMUR Capital, the heart of Walloons
Since 11 December 1986, Namur is the capital of Wallonia and its 3.5 million inhabitants in the heart of Europe of the Regions. The Government, Parliament and the Administration are located in the heart of the city, around the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse, at the foot of the Citadel.
The Europeade, a major event of European proportions, provides the city of Namur with a tremendous opportunity to position itself as the European Capital of Folklore during one year. The Festival will drain thousands of visitors during 5 days, it represents an added value to the international reputation of the city and exceptional economic, cultural and tourism benefits for our citizens and local businesses in general, and for hotels, cafés and restaurants in particular.
To host such an event in the heart of the regional capital will bring together multiple local associations involved in folklore but also all the goodwill of volunteer groups and fraternities all over Wallonia which has hosted Europeade only once since its creation, namely in 1969 in Marche-en-Famenne.
The choice of Namur can put the focus of this event back in the heart of Europe : this geographical question meets the wishes of participants who requested more proximity to the countries of Southern Europe, resulting in reduced travel costs and therefore greater participation to the event.
The means of transportation and access to Namur meet this concern : 4 airports are located close-by – Charleroi, Liège, Brussels and Lille -, freeways and the busiest railway station in Wallonia.
Namur, the capital of Wallonia, is proud of its folklore, a true symbol of a long time legacy, of a cherished tradition.
Popular traditions are still very alive and related events occur throughout the year with, among others, the feast of Saint Vincent by the Frairie Royale des Masuis and Cotelis from Jambes, the Great Bonfires, the Folklore and Traditions Days, Water Jousting of the Buley, the Folklore Festival of Jambes, the Liars Contest by the Royale Moncrabeau and the Fight for the Golden Stilt which takes place during the Fêtes de Wallonie.
All these groups, whether military, historical, re-enactment shows-focused, related to gastronomy, dances, songs and music, maintain, protect and keep those traditions alive. In addition to participating in many local events, they also perform abroad.
People from Namur know how to party and treasure these moments they share in a friendly atmosphere and during which assert their identity.
Capital of Wallonia, gateway to the Belgian Ardennes, a gem born from the love between the Sambre and the Meuse rivers, the city of Namur offers a rare and spectacular atmosphere with the confluence of those two rivers in the heart of the city, overlooked by its citadel, the fortifications embedded in a particularly impressive rocky outcrop. The harmonious historic city center reveals its 18th century mansions.
In all seasons, Namur is also popular for its shopping experience and fine crafts, gastronomy and a rich terroir. The inhabitants share their taste for the art of living well and welcome you home !
